A 14-year-old boy was killed and four military rangers wounded in a motorcycle bomb attack near a fresh market in Nong Chik district of Pattani yesterday afternoon, police said.
The teenager was identified as Aiyadilfitli Yoko, a resident of tambon Bo Thong.
The four rangers were Sgt Maj 1st Class Somphon Limprasoet, Chirasak Kaeo-nopparat, Saidi Yako and Apichat Rakdi.
All were rushed to Nong Chik Hospital, police said.
Sgt Maj Somphon was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital whereas the others had sustained only minor injuries.
Police said the impact of the explosion damaged cars and motorcycles parked nearby.
Meanwhile, national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda said security in the region was being heightened in the wake of another bombing on Sunday that left one officer dead and three others as well as a civilian injured.
Pol Snr Sgt Maj Koson Khongsawat was killed instantly when a bomb went off in front of a security checkpoint in tambon Ban Na in Chana district of Songkhla at around 6pm. The dead officer was the head of security at the checkpoint.
More unrest is feared in the final week of Ramadan, which ends June 4, prompting tighter security in the restive provinces.
