Teen dies after crashing stolen ute on the Gold Coast

A teenager has died in hospital after crashing a stolen ute during an alleged crime spree on the Gold Coast.

Police said 18-year-old Logan Dreier lost control of the vehicle at Southport on Friday morning, causing it to roll several times.

Officers had been tracking the ute, which was stolen from the carpark of an Oxenford theme park a short time earlier.

The Ethical Standards Command was investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Police said the teenager was part of a group broke into a Maudsland home earlier that morning, before taking off in a car with stolen registration plates.

The group allegedly evaded police, before they dumped the car at Oxenford and fled into bushland.

Police said two boys then stole the ute and drove dangerously towards Southport, where they crashed at the intersection of Queen and Nerang streets.

Mr Dreier was taken to the hospital with critical injuries but died overnight.

A social media tribute posted by his girlfriend said: "Thank you for being the light of my life even on your bad days".

"I'm so sorry this had to be our goodbye."

A 17-year-old passenger, who suffered minor injuries, has been charged with break and enter, burglary and possession of dangerous drugs.
