Teen died when parasitic larvae built-up in brain after eating under-cooked pork

Under-cooked pork has been blamed for the death of a teenager whose brain was invaded by parasitic larvae.

The 18-year-old, from India, died after suffering a seizure.

Medics discovered that the larvae had caused cysts to build up throughout his brain.

The deadly condition he suffered, called neurocysticercosis, is caused by bacteria from under-cooked pork invading the nervous system.

Doctors were unable to save the teenager, who has not been named, in the northern state of Haryana.

Dr Nishanth Dev, who led the treatment, wrote in The New England Journal of Medicine : "His parents reported that he had been having pain in the right groin for one week.

"On physical examination, the patient was confused.

"He had swelling over the right eye and tenderness in the right testis.

"Magnetic resonance imaging of the head showed numerous well-defined cystic lesions throughout the cerebral cortex and the brain stem and cerebellum that were consistent with neurocysticercosis."

The patient was given an MRI scan, which revealed he had cysts on his cerebral cortex - the outermost layer of the brain.

He was given anti-epilepsy drugs, but these could not save his life.
