A teenage boy was critically injured in a crash Monday in west suburban Aurora.

The vehicle he was driving hit a utility pole about 11:15 p.m. along Lake Street near Williams Street, according to a statement from Aurora police. Paramedics arrived and started to treat the driver while firefighters worked to remove him from the wreckage.

A medical helicopter was called but could not make it to the scene because of the weather, police said. The driver was taken by ambulance to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora before being transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he remains in critical condition.

Investigators with the traffic unit used drones to create a 3D digital map of the crash scene, which showed that a second vehicle may have witnessed or “played a factor in” the crash, police said.

Officers found the second vehicle and spoke with the driver early Tuesday, police said. Investigators are still trying to determine whether that driver was involved in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Aurora Police Department Traffic Unit at 630-256-5330 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 630-892-1000.
