A man who allegedly drove a stolen car on the wrong side of the road to avoid a border checkpoint has been charged by Queensland police.

The Mitsubishi sedan was travelling north on the New England Highway when it crossed onto the other side of the road and past concrete barriers at about 9am on Monday, police said.

It is alleged the driver abandoned the vehicle on Junabee Road in Warwick before committing a burglary, during which he was confronted by a resident before fleeing with a set of car keys.

The man then allegedly entered another yard where he produced a knife and demanded that resident hand over car keys.

When they refused, police said the man stole a bike before being located in Rotary Park and arrested.

The 19-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, burglary, armed robbery, dangerous operation, unlicensed driving and fail to comply with a COVID-19 health direction as well as three counts of evade police.

He is due to appear before the Warwick Magistrates court on Tuesday.
