A teenage boy has been charged after a 12-year-old girl was attacked and slashed across the face while walking to school in Logan in Brisbane's south yesterday morning.
Her face was allegedly slashed more than 20 times as she walked through a pedestrian tunnel at Kingston.
She managed to get away, running towards Kingston State College to get help.
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and is due to face the Children's court today.
The girl's face was bleeding profusely when an ambulance arrived and took her to Queensland Children's Hospital where she has undergone surgery.
She remains in hospital in a stable condition.
Police say a tip off to Crimestoppers led to the arrest of the teenager.
"A person has rung in and provided some information and police have executed a search warrant at an address in Kingston where they found some clothing that was matching in description to the offenders clothing at the time," Detective actin inspector Grant Ralston said.
"The 12-year-old is quite outstanding. She was able to talk to us prior to having surgery yesterday. It was amazing she could give a description of this offender," he said.
Police are yet to confirm what weapon was used in the attack but a box cutter was found in the vicinity.
Detective Acting Inspector Ralston said yesterday it was a violent attack.
"The assault could only be described as vicious and cowardly," he said.
"The young girl was minding her own business on her own, walking to school with her school bag, and this male offender had struck the victim for no reason."
One mother dropping her children at Kingston State College this morning described the attack as scary.
"My daughter walks that way in the afternoon with her friends and I phoned up her friend's mum and said that's it — they're not walking any more," Cheryl Lewis said.
"It's really, really scary. Especially that she's just 12 — poor kid."
Another parent who didn't want to be named said security cameras were needed in the tunnel where the attack happened.
