A 16-year-old boy was attacked by a gang reportedly wielding metal baseball bats outside a Wirral supermarket.
Witnesses reported police cars racing to the scene of the incident, outside Morrisons supermarket in New Brighton, this evening.
One man took to social media to report "absolute mayhem" as a gang with metal bats "set upon a couple of lads" outside the supermarket.
He added that one of those attacked escaped in a passing car, while the other took refuge inside the store.
Others reported "a large gang" in the area, some of them masked and swinging metal baseball bats.
It was reported staff blocked the entrance to the supermarket after the youth - who had suffered facial injuries - ran inside.
The gang were then reported to have jumped onto electric bikes and headed towards the nearby area of open ground known as the "Dips."
This evening's violent incident was the latest to hit the Wallasey and New Brighton areas this week.
A Merseyside Police spokesperson confirmed they were called to the Morrisons supermarket at 8.40pm this evening, to reports of a large group of youths causing a disturbance outside.
He added: "A 16-year-old male has been assaulted, receiving minor injuries. He suffered a cut to his lip and a small cut to his eye.
"He did not require hospital treatment. Enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened, but it is believed he received his injuries following an altercation."
