Jan. 25--A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody Saturday night after allegedly pointing a handgun at sheriff's deputies, prompting the officers to shoot at the teen, grazing him, authorities said.
Deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon about 9 p.m. near the intersection of South Indiana and Dennison streets in East Los Angeles, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department statement.
After deputies spotted a vehicle matching a description of the suspect's vehicle, they attempted to make a traffic stop, the department said. The boy then exited the vehicle and fled, running eastbound on Dennison.
The boy turned and pointed a handgun at the deputies, who opened fire, authorities said. The boy sustained a graze wound to the upper torso and was treated at the scene by medical personnel.
The teen continued running after he was injured, and additional deputies helped surround the neighborhood to search for him. He was found in the backyard of a residence on the 1000 block of S. Townsend Avenue and taken into custody, authorities said.
A handgun was found with the teen, the department said. He was taken to the East Los Angeles Sheriff's Station and booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, the department said.
Officer-involved shootings that result in a suspect being wounded by sheriff's deputies are investigated by the Los Angeles County district attorney, the sheriff's homicide bureau and the department's internal affairs bureau, according to the Sheriff's Department.
