Teen arrested after heroic shoppers and staff tackle him to ground after stealing from Henry Street phone shop

Heroic shoppers and staff members in a Dublin phone shop helped gardai catch a thief over the weekend - tackling him to the ground after he attempted to flee from a shop that he had just stolen goods in.

The male teenager was arrested by gardai after carrying out a theft at the iConnect phone shop on Henry Street at around 4:20pm on Sunday evening.

In footage obtained by Dublin Live, the male can be seen being held on the ground in a leg grip by who appears to be a member of staff.

The staff member is helped by two shoppers but the thief breaks free and tries to make a run for it only to be tackled to the ground by several members of the public.

The teen makes a second break for it but is restrained once again by four shoppers who manage to hold on to the thief and drag him back into the store.

The thief is bundled in the door where he is restrained by the staff member once again.

In a statement to Dublin Live, a spokesman for the gardai said they "are investigating a theft that took place at a retail premises on Henry Street yesterday, Sunday 6 October at approximately 4:20pm".

He added: "A male in his teens was arrested and has been released with a file to be prepared for the JLO. Investigations are ongoing."
