Teen arrested after 40-minute car chase through Co Cork

A teenager has been arrested after gardai were led on a long chase through one county.

The incident kicked off this evening on the M8 in Fermoy, north Cork and lasted 40 minutes until a suspect was eventually detained in Castlemartyr in the east.

The pursuit began after gardai tried to pull in a car that was breaking the speed limit on the M8, Cork Beo reports.

The car went through the town before going to Conna and through Tallow.

Officers set up a block in Castlemartyr where the car was stopped around 7.20pm.

A teenager was arrested and is currently being detained in Fermoy Garda Station.

A garda spokesman told Cork Beo: "At approximately 6:40pm today, Monday 27 July 2020 Gardaí detected a car driving in excess of the speed limit on the M8.

"Gardaí attempted to stop the vehicle and a ‘managed containment’ operation ensued which ended when the offending vehicle was stopped in Castlemartyr at approximately 7:20pm.

"A male in his teens was arrested and is currently detained at Fermoy Garda Station.

"Investigations are ongoing."
