Boy, 16, among 2 killed, 4 wounded in overnight shootings in Chicago

Jan. 15--Two people, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed and at least four others were wounded in shootings in Chicago overnight.

The 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in Bronzeville around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The teen was walking through a vacant lot in the 300 block of East Pershing Road when he was approached by two gunmen, said police spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro. The gunmen opened fire and hit the 16-year-old in his chest, abdomen and legs, police said.

The teen was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

He was identified as Terrell Campbell, of the 8800 block of South Wabash Avenue, according to the medical examiner.

Following the shooting, police taped off the vacant lot on the southwest corner of East Pershing and South Calumet Avenue as detectives investigated.

No one was in custody Wednesday morning.

A 31-year-old man died after he and an 18-year-old man were shot near an elementary school in Brighton Park on Tuesday. The slain man was identified as Rene Arredondo, of the 4500 block of South Rockwell Street.

About 3:25 a.m. Wednesday, a 56-year-old man walked into South Shore Hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the knee in the South Chicago neighborhood, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman.

The man told police the shooting happened in the 7900 block of South Crandon Avenue. He was listed in good condition early Wednesday.

At least two others -- a 20-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman -- were injured in separate shootings on the South and Southwest sides earlier Tuesday evening, police said.
