Teen, 16, shoots 'dad dead and injures brother after being asked to tidy room'

A 16-year-old has allegedly shot his dad dead and left his brother critically injured following a row about tidying his room.

Jeffrey Dale Wanca has been charged with the murder of dad Chad Wanca, 43, and attempted murder of 12-year-old brother Hunter Wanca.

Jeffrey's grandad Rick McNamara described him as a "typical teenager not wanting to do things to help" and said things had "escalated."

Officers raced to the house in Toney, Alabama on Saturday afternoon after receiving several calls about a shooting.

When they arrived Jeffrey walked towards them with his hands in the air and was arrested, a Madison County Sheriff's Office spokesman said.

Inside the house they found Chad and Hunter suffering with gunshot wounds.

Chad was rushed to Huntsville Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

Hunter was flown to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham in a critical condition but he is now 'alert and talking' according to his grandparents Linda and Rick McNamara.

The couple said they were told the shooting started when their oldest grandson was asked to clean his room.

Rick told WAFF 48: ‘It was a domestic dispute between father and son about cleaning things up and trying to be a responsible teenage figure in his life, which he had down pretty good.

"It’s just a your typical teenager not wanting to do things to help. It escalated."

Linda added: “I’m going to the hospital. I hope I’ll be able to get in and see my grandson.

"I’d like to go to the jail as well and see my other grandson. I want to talk to him. I don’t know where his head is at.

"I love my grandsons. I love them both."

Linda said they had not bee allowed to see Jeffrey, who is being held at a Madison County Jail on a combined £165,000 bond, CBS affiliate WHNT reported .

Linda added: “We hope to (see him). I really would and need to talk to my grandson and let him know that we are there for him."

Madison County investigators initially would not release Jeffrey's name as they were treating him as a juvenile in the incident, but this has since changed and he is now being charged as an adult.
