Perhaps the biggest theme of Cincinnati Bengals OTAs before training camp has been the deep ball in the Joe Burrow-led offense.
Burrow’s newfound velocity and an emphasis on the deep-passing game have commanded the chatter out of camp — for good reason given the struggles last year.
Tee Higgins, one hyped element of the improving passing attack, wants to build on his stellar rookie season by getting better in this area, too.
Higgins broke it down for the media, according to Jay Morrison of The Athletic:
“Last year, I didn’t capitalize for the most part on deep balls. This year, I’m really focusing on capitalizing on those deep balls because they’re key plays in games. Today it felt great going out there and catching those deep balls. And hopefully, we can keep it going for the season.”
Stellar rookie season or not, Burrow, Higgins — and the rest of the weapons for that matter — just couldn’t get it done in this area. Like Morrison pointed out, Burrow finished 9 of 46 on throws of 20-plus yards.
Higgins, who says he’s even stronger and faster this year, could play a big role in fixing this problem alongside Ja’Marr Chase. If that component of the attack gets going, Burrow and his weapons should look even better while winning more games.
