Teden Mengi gets new Manchester United shirt number

Young Manchester United defender Teden Mengi appears to have been given a new squad number of 43 for the upcoming season.

With a week to go until United get their Premier League campaign underway against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side stepped up their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Aston Villa on Saturday.

United, with a team lacking many of its stars who have only just returned from international duty, slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park through Ollie Watkins' early goal but there were some positives to take from the game.

New signing Donny van de Beek impressed in his first appearance for the side, Daniel James looks to be finding form again and Mengi got another well deserved cameo for the first team.

The versatile defender captained Neil Wood's Under-21 side to a 6-0 demolition of League Two's Salford City in the week and came on in the middle of the defence in the second-half against Villa, playing around 25 minutes.

Solskjaer has been full of praise for the 18-year-old and it looks likely that he will get more opportunities in the senior side this season.

It's reflected in his new shirt number as he wore the No.43 against Villa and Salford, a big promotion from the No.71 he wore on his first team debut against LASK in the Europa League last season.

If the number change is permanent then Mengi will join fellow academy graduates Mason Greenwood (No.11). Dean Henderson (No.26) and Brandon Williams (No.33) in being handed new numbers this summer.
