Teden Mengi cites teenage Man Utd teammate as inspiration after making senior debut

Teden Mengi has name-checked Manchester United teammate Brandon Williams as his inspiration after making his first-team debut on Wednesday night.

The 18-year-old defender was introduced as a late second-half substitute in United's Europa League comeback win over LASK, with the Red Devils securing their spot in the quarter-finals.

And the highly-rated youngster admitted that Williams' rise through the ranks has provided him with hope that he could do the same under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

When asked if Solskjaer's approach to put his faith in youth has given him a lift, he said: “Of course. Especially Brandon, because we both play in defence.

"So when I saw him kicking on, it made me even hungrier. It made me think: why can't I do it? Obviously I got my opportunity today.”

Mengi also revealed his first-team debut left his mum in tears.

“It was a brilliant moment, I loved it," he added.

“My mum said she was crying – I've already checked my phone! “Obviously, it's a great feeling. I'd like to thank everyone that's been around me, supported me, from my family, all my team-mates. Everyone in the first team made it very easy for me. Everyone was very welcoming.

"But the Academy staff as well. Also, I'd like to thank the manager for giving me the opportunity.

"But, again, it's just the start. It's down to myself now to just keep on kicking on. But yeah, I'm very happy with it.”

Referring to the teenage defender, Solskjaer added: "He's a leader. Centre-back, of course he's one that we believe in.

"He's the same age group as Mason (Greenwood) so they've grown up together, good mates.

"He's strong, quick, good on the ball, so I think we've got a decent player there."
