Teddy Sheringham sends message to Manchester United ahead of Barcelona clash

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham has issued words of encouragement to the squad ahead of tonight’s Champions League showdown with Barcelona.

The Red Devils trail 1-0 on aggregate heading into the second leg at Camp Nou, which means another remarkable comeback is required if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are to seal a spot in the semi-finals.

United have already registered famous victories on the road in Europe this season after beating Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain but the test against Barcelona , unbeaten at home in 30 Champions League matches, is a stern test.

Sheringham, however, has stated a hero can emerge from the squad if they score a famous goal that would replicate the equalising effort he netted in the 1999 Champions League final in Catalonia against Bayern Munich, before Solskjaer ’s dramatic winner.

“I would tell them that this is a special arena. It’s nights like this you want to be remembered for. Go and make yourself a hero, make sure you do it as a team,” he told the Times .

"If you do win, one of you is going to come out of it as an unbelievable hero for life, someone who everyone will remember. If you stick together as a team, one of you could have that moment.”

Echoing his point, Sheringham stated that people across the globe always mention his goal in the 1999 final, where United scored twice in injury time to register one of the competition’s greatest ever comebacks.

Ronaldinho reveals reason behind failed Manchester United transfer

“It’s over 7,000 days since I scored that goal and I’ve been asked about it, on average, once a day,” he added.

“I was on safari in South Africa and someone said: ‘Excuse me mate, you ain’t Teddy Sheringham are you? Are you the one that scored that goal in the Champions League?’

"Then he tells me where he was, who he was with. It’s great to relive other people’s memories.”
