Former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham has suggested that the north London club’s ambition could be a reason why Harry Kane could stay beyond the summer.
The current Spurs forward has already hinted of his desire to depart the club in the transfer window, citing a desire to lift major honours as one of his prime reasons.
He has already been linked with moves to Premier League rivals Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea.
However, Sheringham believes that there could be a few reasons behind the 27-year-old choosing an extended stay with Spurs, the first being his long-term deal signed in 2018.
Talking to Sky Sports, he said: “You can tell by the manager that Daniel Levy is trying to bring into Tottenham that they’re still optimistic and they’re trying to reach for the stars.
“I don’t think it’s the end of the road for Harry and Tottenham right this minute, it will depend a lot on which manager comes in and, at the end of the day, he has got a three-year contract left still as well.
“If they don’t want to let him go and they’ve had assurances from Daniel Levy in previous summers, he might be there for next season.”
With Spurs having improved their fortunes dramatically in the last five years, since the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, Sheringham has suggested that the club’s current ambitions could convince Kane to stay - but that a trophy would be crucial in that fact.
“Things have tried to improve; they’ve reached the Champions League final, they’ve been optimistic, they’ve brought in a big manager to finally win something for the first time in a long time,” Sheringham said.
“They’re still trying so they’re progressing in the right manner. It’s not the end of the world if Harry does have to stay at Tottenham. I still see them on that upward spiral but things need to change.
“I know we’ve said it for a long time about Tottenham, they need to win something and win something quick.”
Despite that 'upward spiral' under Pochettino, Spurs' dismal second half of their Premier League campaign and subsequent sacking of Jose Mourinho means the club has missed out on Champions League football for two years running.
