England Euro 96 legend Teddy Sheringham says he was disappointed to be taken off with Alan Shearer with ten minutes left in the Three Lions' 4-1 victory over Holland - because he felt they could both have scored hat-tricks.
The former Manchester United and Tottenham player, speaking to Mark Pougatch for a new edition of ITV's Euro 96 Relived podcast, says rather than elation at what some have described as one of England's greatest performances, he felt disappointment at being substituted.
On reflection, he describes the game as 'exhilarating to play in', but explains: "If I remember rightly, myself and Alan Shearer came off with 10 minutes to go, didn't we? We were replaced.
"I was a little bit disappointed we weren't allowed to go on and get our hat-tricks. From my point of view, I was disappointed I couldn't go on a get a hat-trick for England at Wembley in a major competition, so I can only imagine how Shearer felt, even though we knew it was a squad game.
"And to put two other players on to have that experience, so in the next game if needed they've already had that experience. But from a personal point of view, that was my feeling.
"But delighted to be involved in a performance that was exhilarating to play in. I've been told by people since it's the best they've ever seen England play, so lovely to be involved in it."
