Teddy Bridgewater’s neighborhood toy drive exceeds expectations

New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has a great reputation as one of the nicest guys in the NFL. The respect he’s earned from teammates as well as opponents speaks for itself, but Bridgewater’s work outside of football has also gained notice.

Last July, Bridgewater made a trip to his hometown of Miami to give back to his community. He rented a U-Haul box truck and filled it up with bicycles, backpacks, school supplies, Super Soaker water guns, and other toys. Then he parked it on 15th Avenue and let the neighborhood kids take what they wanted. When they emptied the truck, Bridgewater opened his wallet and gave the children left in line $20 each to go get something for themselves.

“See the thing is,” Bridgewater wrote from his official Twitter account after the event, “when you’re genuine and your heart is pure, the attention means nothing. This was last July. My new name in the hood is ‘MR.UHAUL’ because I will pull up and shut down 15th (Avenue) down whenever I feel like it.”

It’s great to see members of the Saints remaining active in their communities, even if they’ve moved on to other cities. Bridgewater has remained active in charitable pursuits back to his college days at Louisville, where he volunteered in tornado damage recovery and local public school events. As a pro, he’s taken the opportunity to support cancer research and awareness after witnessing his mother battle the disease firsthand. In him, the Saints clearly have a good guy in the locker room.
