TED is coming back to London with Beyond Borders event – what you need to know

This year's TEDxLondon theme is "beyond borders" (Picture: TED)

Who doesn’t love a TEDx talk? Whether it’s the about power poses or the search for the giant squid (a personal favourite), everyone has a go-to TEDx talk they love to watch.

Now is your chance to watch the next generation of TEDx talks in London at the 2019 TEDxLondon event, which is taking over the Southbank Centre for one day in May.

This year’s event brings the Beyond Borders theme to London for the first time. The stories on stage will cover topics including the environment, science, technology, mental health, data security and privacy.

Director and curator of TEDxLondon, Maryam Pasha, said in a statement: “Our mission is to uncover, support and promote ideas worth spreading, inspired by TED and the city we love. We want to encourage dialogue, create inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity, and spark debate and discussion that continues long after the event.

“This year, we continue to seek out the most inspiring voices and ideas that go beyond limitations, beyond labels, pushing boundaries to create the kind of world we all want to live in. This is what Beyond Borders means.”

Beth Gardner, the environmental journalist and author, will be doing a talk, as well as Nikesh Shukla, editor of the award-winning essay collection, The Good Immigrant.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine professor, James Logan, whose research uses the sense of smell in insects to develop methods to detect and control diseases like malaria, will be sure to share some illuminating work on the future of global health.

As well, there will be a few OPENx winners on stage, TED’s young people training programme. The three winners from the recent London cohort will be discussing things like autism, the UK care system, and how science could revolutionise organ transplant.

In between talks, there will be performances from musicians and artists to help you digest all that knowledge.
