Tech & Science Daily: Online abuse of children at record high, says NSPCC report

A NSPCC report reveals online abuse of children is rocketing and they’re warning that social networks are failing to ‘design child safety’ into their platforms.

The child protection charity is calling for the government to strengthen its plans for new internet protection laws after Freedom of Information responses from police forces showed nearly a 70 per cent increase in offences involving sexual communication with a child since 2018.

We speak to Hannah Ruschen, the NSPCC’s online safety policy and public affairs officer.

Meanwhile, Facebook’s secretive algorithms are under fresh scrutiny after a news story about a doctor who died after getting a Covid-19 jab was the most viewed US post at the beginning of this year, with nearly 54 million views. Health authorities worldwide have found the vaccine to be safe and extremely effective.

It comes amid claims first reported by the New York Times that the tech platform withheld the release of a report fearing its findings would “look bad” for the firm.

Scientists say the deadly deluges of rain causes flooding in parts of Western Europe last month was caused by climate change.

Researchers from World Weather Attribution say that the warming of Earth means such biblical levels of rain are now nine times more likely than they once were.
