Tech review: AT&T Primetime tablet is good enough to keep kids occupied

I've been taking a look at AT&T's Primetime, an Android tablet AT&T hopes will be a vehicle for you or your kids to stream their DirecTV content.

This isn't a high-end tablet _ the pricing will tell you that much.

The cash price is $200 ($10 per month with a zero-interest 20-month installment agreement, or $29.99 with a 2-year contract with a qualifying plan).

The hardware is decent for an Android tablet. The screen is 10 inches with a resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 pixels.

It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 2 gigahertz octa-core processor with two gigabytes of RAM and 32 GB of storage. A microSD slot can expand the storage with up to another 128 GB.

The 9,070 milliamp hour battery can power the Primetime for up to 11 hours of video watching.

The Primetime can stream audio via Bluetooth to two sets of headphones at a time, which should be perfect for keeping a couple of kids occupied in the back seat.

There are also dual front-facing speakers with Dolby Audio if you don't want to wear headphones.

The operating system is Android 7 (Nougat).

Connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.2, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and LTE, which you have to expect in a tablet from a wireless provider.

Front and rear cameras each have a 5-megapixel sensor.

The AT&T Primetime has a TV Mode, which is a quick launcher for the video apps with a single swipe from the home screen or lock screen. AT&T hopes you'll be swiping to watch DirecTV or DirecTV Now, but since you're likely to have your frequently-accessed video apps on your home screen, I can't see how TV mode saves much time.

CONCLUSIONS

If you're in the market for a tablet to watch video, and you're already an AT&T wireless customer, the Primetime is a pretty inexpensive middle-of-the-road tablet.

None of the specs are eye-popping, but it's a good enough tablet to toss in the back seat on long trips.
