Tech expert issues urgent warning to all Whatsapp users

A tech expert has warned Whatsapp users to be cautious while using the messaging service.

Birmingham Live reports anyone who uses the popular app could be hacked due to a loophole in their service.

Although Whatsapp messages are end-to-end encrypted, chats can be accessed on the cloud if they are backed up.

And @WABetaInfo has written on Twitter to say the messaging service is working to expand their back-up service in a future update.

The tweet said: "WhatsApp is also working to bring end-to-end encrypted LOCAL backups on WhatsApp beta for Android! They were working on E2EE backups on Google Drive, but they will extend the feature for local backups as well. This feature will be available in a future update."

@WABetaInfo is an independent website formed to announce news about WhatsApp, their updates and new features that has 95k followers on Twitter.

People who follow the account were confused over what this means for their safety.

One tweeted: "Can you explain more about local backup? Asking for a friend,"

Another added: "What does e2e encryption even mean when we are talking about data encryption at rest? This makes no sense to me whatsoever."

A third commented "Will this enable restoring android backup to iOS?,"

@WABetaInfo replied: "No, because they are two different features."

Tech experts have said the cloud services are susceptible to hacking from scammers and fraudsters.

Media files and message histories can also be accessed by authorities with a search warrant.
