Tebboune Hopes Syria Will Take Part in Upcoming Arab League Summit Hosted by Algeria

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune hoped on Friday Syria will take part in the upcoming Arab League summit scheduled for Algeria in March.

In remarks to local television, he said: "Syria will take part, God willing, out of Algeria's keenness to ensure the success of the meeting."

On disputes among Arab countries and speculation that the representation at the summit will be lowered, he said: "Algeria brings together and reconciles" parties.

Indirectly referring to Algiers' dispute with Rabat, he stressed: "We are not hostile to anyone, except those who are hostile to us."

In August, Algeria severed diplomatic ties with Morocco, citing alleged hostile acts.

"Morocco dismissed the "completely unjustified" decision, calling some of Algeria's reasons "absurd."

"Reforming the Arab League has become necessary," Tebboune declared. "Nothing has changed since 1984, this is not normal. It is not normal for us to meet, discuss issues and return to our countries without achieving anything."

Syria was expelled from the 22-member Arab League after its war erupted in 2011.
