Tears outside hospital as little boy finally leaves after 14 months

This is the emotional moment a little boy left Alder Hey Children's Hospital for the first time in 14 months to return home.

Four-year-old Hari Jones, was greeted by a guard of honour from hospital staff and Merseyside Police on Tuesday, as he left the hospital with his family.

Hari, from Caegwyn in Wales, was in hospital due to respiratory failure and a condition called X-linked myotubular myopathy, that primarily affects the muscles used for movement.

His family were waiting for a purpose-built home to be built, which meant Hari had to stay in hospital until it was completed.

Video footage taken on Tuesday, shows the huge round of applause the four-year-old received as he finally left hospital.

In the video, Hari, who "absolutely loves the emergency services", can be seen waving at police officers and hospital staff lined up outside the entrance.

A spokesperson for Alder Hey said Hari was met by police cars, vans, bikes, officers and police dogs "to give him the send-off he deserves and escort him home, as he is a VIC after all...very important child!"

Merseyside Police also arranged for his local police force back in Wales to meet him on his return home this afternoon.

The four-year-old struck a chord with BBC Hospital viewers when he appeared on the programme in March.

During the episode, staff were able to teach Hari's family how to fit his tracheotomy to allow the family to go back home to Wales - once their home had been completed.
