Tears at funeral of twins who died after dad accidentally left them in hot car

Tragic twins who died in a boiling hot car have been laid to rest in tiny white coffins by sobbing relatives as they paid a final farewell.

Grieving mourners comforted each other as they gathered for the memorial service of one-year-olds Luna and Phoenix Rodriguez.

The youngsters, from New York, died of heatstroke on July 26 after their father, Juan Rodriguez, reportedly forgot to drop them off at day care.

They were left in his car in sweltering 42C temperatures for around eight hours while he completed a full shift of work at a hospital.

Witnesses said he screamed out "I killed my babies" when he returned to the vehicle and found them.

At the emotional service last week, Luna and Phoenix were dressed in white and covered with a transparent veil.

The youngsters' grandmother Catalina Valerio was heard saying “they are leaving us now” as people took it in turns say their goodbyes.

Small white pillows were placed in each coffin to fill the gaps, one close to each baby’s tiny feet; the other under their heads, reports The New York Times.

Luna wore a white dress with a knit cream cardigan, a white headband with a flower matched her shiny shoes, which had small flowers on the top.

Phoenix was dressed in a white tuxedo with a small bow tie and pristine white shoes with a white hat that matched.

Two large hearts made out of pink and blue roses and surrounded by white roses also stood beside each coffin.

The twins' heartbroken parents were seen embracing.

Mum Marissa has stood by her husband following the ordeal which she described as a “horrific accident.”

She said he is a "great father" and that he would never have intentionally hurt their children.

Mr Rodriguez, 39, an Iraq war veteran, appeared in court last week over the twins' deaths where he was told he had no criminal case to answer.

In a statement, Mrs Rodriguez said: "I will never get over this loss and I know he will never forgive himself for this mistake.

"This was a horrific accident, and I need him by my side to go through this together.

"Though I am hurting more than I ever imagined possible, I still love my husband.

"He is a good person and great father and I know he would've never done anything to hurt our children intentionally."

According to the  NY Post , Iraq war veteran Rodriguez told police at the scene: "I assumed I dropped them off at day care before I went to work.

"I blanked out.

"My babies are dead. I killed my babies."

Mr Rodriguez has been described by neighbours as a doting dad, who recently set up a bouncy castle in the garden to celebrate their first birthday.
