Tears are shed as Clifton 'legend' closes garage after 42 years of service

A popular character in Clifton has told of his amazing journey as a garage owner who served the community for the last 42 years.

Sadly, his business will close down on Monday (August 2) with many "shedding tears" after the announcement.

With a passion for cars that started in his teenage years, Bob Sherwin opened his garage on Southcurch Drive in September 1978.

He has worked in the car trade before starting his own dream business.

The company was one of a kind in Clifton, with Mr Sherwin building up his business slowly but steadily.

The 68-year-old said: "I know everyone and everyone knows me.

"It has been a fantastic journey but sadly it has to come to an end."

And just like all good things must come to an end, Bob's garage will close for good leaving its legend behind.

Speaking about his retirement plans, he added: "I am closing because there is too much fishing to do.

"I am a very keen fisher and I am going to France next week.

"I know many will be upset and shed tears - but this is the end."

Bob has started to build up a reputation in the area because it was the only garage in Clifton.

Besides providing good service to his customers, he said that he has "never charged for entertainment".

"I will miss the banter with the customers, and I know that they will miss my jokes too.

"It has been a good business."

The popular garage had the same familiar faces throughout the years, with Mr Sherwin as the front man.

His life partner and company secretary Karen Brady, 58, has been alongside his business for the last 20 years.

And mechanical engineer, Joe Lausi, 51, has been with the business for 34 years.

Mr Sherwin added: "It was my decision to leave - it is time for a change.

"I have been part of the community for so many years and we have a strong bond - it is time to go."
