Tearful Theresa May chokes up as she resigns as PM of 'the country I love'

Tearful Theresa May was overcome with emotion as she resigned as Prime Minister, saying it had been an honour to serve "the country I love".

She finally confirmed she would step down as leader of the Conservative Party in a harrowing speech on the steps of Number 10.

She began to stumble on her words as she confirmed she would shortly be leaving the job that “it has been the honour of my life to hold.”

“The second female Prime Minister,” she said, hoping to inject some optimism into her heartbreaking speech, “but certainly not the last.”

Her voice finally cracked as she said: “I do so with no ill will, but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to have served the country I love.”

Onlookers felt uncomfortable at the uncharacteristic display of emotion from a Prime Minister known as the “Maybot” - as she turned, hung her head and walked back into Number 10.

In her speech, Mrs May said she had "done my best" to deliver a Brexit deal as she made a statement about her future in Downing Street.

"I have striven to make the UK a country that works not just for a privileged few but for everyone and to honour the result of the EU referendum," she said.

She announced she is standing down as Tory party leader on Friday June 7.
