Tearful moment mum helps baby girl ring 'cancer-free' bell after beating brain tumour

This is the emotional moment a mum helped her baby daughter ring a hospital's 'cancer-free' bell after beating a brain tumour.

Lilian Grace Borden was finally placed in remission this week, five months after being born with an 'ominous spot on her brain stem', last September.

She was filmed resting in her dad's arms as mum Leann Borden placed the bell cord in her tiny fist and shook it in front of overwhelmed staff.

Leann from Reno in Nevada, then began to cry as cameras flashed to catch the moment baby Lilian was finally cancer free.

Following her birth, little Lilian had to undergo multiple courses of treatments after a nurse noticed something wrong with her movements.

Speaking to Good Morning America, mum Leann said: "She was not distressed at birth. We held her, she cried, we cried, all was right with the world.

"[But] Lily wasn’t moving her limbs quite right."

Writing on a GoFundMe page the family started to fund Lily's treatment, the parents said: "They ordered an MRI and there it was—an ominous spot on her brain stem.

"By then Lily’s breathing had become compromised so they whisked her off to NICU and placed her on a breathing tube and gastric feeding tube.

"No one had ever seen an MRI quite like this, so they consulted with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.

"Arrangements were made, and Lily and I were flown to Oakland on a medical transport plane.

"By the time of her next MRI, just days later, the tumor was larger and now ran from her brain stem down her spinal cord to below her shoulders.

"They offered little hope - the tumor was inoperable and growing aggressively - but proceeded with a biopsy. The results indicated the tumor was an aggressive stage 3-4 malignant glioma.

"A tiny ray of hope existed in a recently approved targeted chemotherapy for tumors of a certain genetic makeup. But they needed to act fast if there was to be any chance of saving Lily."

Just under a month after the baby was born, Lily began chemotherapy to target the tumor and was later placed in remission.

Speaking in the video, Leann said: "Before I ring the bell I just want to say to everybody here we are so grateful for everything that you do.

"We would have lost everything. You guys are all incredible. I've never met such amazing people in my whole life."
