Didi Hamann has hit out at FSG, telling them they might as well 'tear the Shankly statue down' after betraying Liverpool and the people of city by founding the European Super League.
The Reds are one of 12 founding members who have stated their intention to form a breakaway European competition at the expense of the Champions League, with their actions facing widespread criticism from the football world.
Such a move is not the first time FSG has made a controversial decision during their tenure at Anfield, having previously U-turned when announcing a ticket price increase and again over a decision to place club staff on furlough.
And while Hamann is not surprised by their involvement in the European Super League, he insists it is a betrayal of everything Liverpool Football Club stands for.
"I think surprised is the wrong word. Liverpool, a lot of things have happened in the past that I didn’t understand or agree with," he told Sky Sports. "There was the furloughing of the staff to ask for Government money to pay the employees of the football club, which was then taken back.
"But if you look at the history of Liverpool, it’s a working man’s club, and if you know the history of Liverpool, people pride themselves on being together, sticking together, that’s been documented over the years, if you know what happened after Hillsborough, the way the whole city stuck together over 25-30 years to get the truth.
"This is what, not only the football club, but the city prides itself on.
"If you look at Shankly, what he said, Gary Neville very poignantly posted a quote from Shankly on his social media account where it says: ‘We have to look after everybody. If we do well, we have to make sure what’s next to us does well’ and signing up to the Super League is against everything that Liverpool Football Club stands for.
"If this is where Liverpool want to be, you may as well tear the Shankly statue down because Liverpool Football Club always stood for helping each other, being there for people, not only their employees, but people in the city, outside the city. Whoever needed the help, the club were there.
"I’m not surprised by it because the greed shown by some of the big clubs is evident in recent months, especially in this chapter, but they should be listening to the fans.
"I think the fans asked for the banners to be removed for the next home game and I think it’s about time they listened to the fans and it’s about time football fans get the football club back, not only Liverpool but England.
"We have a lot of American owners and the American model doesn’t work in Europe. I hope they understand it at one stage."
