Teams are lobbying NBA to raise luxury tax threshold to facilitate trades

The NBA and NBPA have about four days left before they reach their self-imposed October 30 deadline to make modifications to the current collective bargaining agreement before they start the 2020-21 season. And among the modifications, NBA front offices are hoping for the league to agree to is increasing the luxury tax threshold, with the purpose being to facilitate more trades, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

According to Marks, teams that do not have cap space, such as the Golden State Warriors, will be among the teams hoping for an increase in the tax threshold, so they can more easily make trades.

The Lakers have a lot of free agents this offseason, most notably, star big man Anthony Davis, who is expected to re-sign with the team on a longer-term deal. This could, however, make it easier for them to sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and other free agents, like Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard, if the luxury tax threshold goes up. The Lakers project to have cap space again in 2021.
