Team who advised on Blackpool FC sale defies economic turmoil to seal more than 30 deals this year

The finance team who advised on the sale of Blackpool Football Club says it has defied political and economic uncertainty to complete more than 30 deals already this year.

BDO's northern corporate finance team says the combined value of those deals is in excess of £850m, and they have involved privately-owned, private equity-backed and FTSE-listed businesses across the north.

The most high-profile of those was in advising Simon Sadler in relation to the acquisition of League One team Blackpool FC, which was announced in June.

Jason Whitworth, M&A partner at the Yorkshire office of BDO, said: “Despite political turbulence both here and globally, and with important Brexit decisions on the horizon, the team has had a busy start to the year, and it’s great to see that deal activity has remained strong. We look forward to seeing where the second half of 2019 will take us.”

According to BDO, other high-profile regional deals included advising wireless infrastructure specialist Spyder Facilities on its sale to global investment firm Digital Colony and advising process automation specialist Lambert Engineering on its sale to AIM-listed packaging solutions provider Mpac Group plc.

The team advises across the north, nationally and internationally on mergers and acquisitions, transaction services (buy-side and sell-side due diligence), as well as tax advisory services.

The team works across various sectors including manufacturing, consumer markets, technology, live events, recruitment, transport & logistics and business services.

A spokeswoman said the success comes "amid political uncertainty" caused by Brexit and the possibility of an imminent referendum, election or leaving the EU without a deal.

It's also a period of expansion for BDO’s northern corporate finance team, which has appointed M&A partner Rob McCann in Manchester.

Mr McCann said: “It’s a fantastic time to have joined BDO and the Corporate Finance team, as we continue to grow and win work with high quality entrepreneurially spirited businesses. I look forward to supporting our clients’ investment ambitions for the future."
