Sunderland caretaker-manager Andrew Taylor made two changes to the side Phil Parkinson named in his final outing at Fleetwood Town on Friday.
He brought skipper Max Power into midfield in place of Chris Maguire, while Elliot Embleton made his first league start of the season, taking the place of Danny Graham.
Both Maguire and Graham were included amongst the subs, but there was no place in the matchday squad for Jack Diamond with George Dobson on the bench instead.
Burton Albion boss Jake Buxton named the same starting XI that beat Charlton Athletic 4-2 a week ago – a result that gave the Brewers only their second win of the season.
