The Houston Texans Foundation announced the creation of the Houston Texans Social Justice Fund Friday.
The new philanthropic endeavor from the Texans will assist nonprofits in the greater Houston area which provide legal services for underprivileged citizens and support youth.
The three nonprofits that the players and organization will support at 8 Million Stories, Restoring Justice, and the YMCA of Greater Houston. The three nonprofits were chosen through a grant process and will receive $100,000 from the Houston Texans Foundation.
“Establishing a fund to bolster social justice programs in the City of Houston has been an ambition for the Texans organization for several years,” said Texans chairman and chief executive officer Cal McNair in a statement. “Following the leadership of our players, who have dedicated numerous hours giving back to the community in which they work and live, we are proud to announce the creation of this fund which we hope will grow to make a lasting impact over time in our community.”
In March 2018 the Texans’ social justice initiative was to partner with the Greater Houston Police Activities League and have players go on ride alongs with officers, visit hospitals through the Badges & Bears program, and even take part in Police Activities League youth activities, including a $10,000 grant to support sports programs and host a PLAY 60 event with Texans rookies.
