Team Ireland's Emmet Brennan makes last 16 at Olympic boxing qualifiers

Ireland's Emmet Brennan saw off Bosnia and Herzegovina's Radenko Tomic to reach the last 16 of the Olympic boxing qualifiers at London's Copperbox Arena.

"I stuck to instructions and it just went a little bit better than we thought,” Brennan said after victory.

“The plan is to go all the way. You don’t come here without planning on that.”

There are three more Irish fighters in action today, with Tina Desmond taking on Italy's Angela Carina at 6:15pm.

George Bates faces Spain's Leon Dominguez at 7:15pm and Ireland's Kiril Afanasev clashes with Georgian Begadze Nikoloz at 9pm.

Team Ireland has 13 representatives taking part in qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics - among 300 boxers representing 40 European nations.

The qualifying tournament is one of the few sporting events in Europe to survive shut-downs due to the coronavirus, with organisers following Public Health England advice.
