Team GB Winter Olympic star reverses retirement to target 2026 Games after DQ heartbreak

Former Team GB star Elise Christie has announced that she is planning to return for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Christie, a short track speed skater, retired from the sport just two months ago after failing to qualify for this year's Games.

Despite winning three World Championships and ten European Championships, Christie has never won an Olympic medal.

In her first Games in 2010, she finished 11th in the 500m, 19th in the 1000m and 20th in the 1500m.

She then suffered heartbreak at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, getting disqualified in all three events.

The 2018 Winter Olympics also ended in heartbreak for Christie, who crashed out in the 500m final and was disqualified in both the 100m and 1500m events.

In her emotional retirement post, Christie said "part of my heart will always be missing because I never achieved my end goal" of winning an Olympic medal.

However, Christie is now hoping for another opportunity to compete at the games, vowing to make a return for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

When asked if she had made peace with the Olympics, Christie said live on the BBC during the Winter Olympics coverage: "No. I thought I had. Watching the 500 metres event the other day, I’ve made a vow I’m going to do everything I can to try to get back out at the next one.

"I'm not going to be skating the 1500m, though. That's a promise.

"It’s not going to be easy and it’s not something I can say I’ll definitely be able to do because I don’t have the financial backing to do it at the minute.

"If I were to try to do it again, I’d still skate for Britain but trying to do it training somewhere else and only focusing on the sprint distances."

Christie added that she has been in contact with her former teammate, three-time Olympian turned personal trainer Sarah Lindsay, about a comeback.

"I've already been talking to Sarah, and we need to get back in shape," Christie said. "But we're going to have to be going abroad, realistically, and then self-funding and figuring all that out.

"So I need some time to do that. But I'm going to start getting back into shape. I've had three months of eating cookies."
