Team GB set to lose celebrated Olympic milestone by being stripped of medal

Team GB are on the verge of losing their silver medal from the 4x100m relay.

CJ Ujah has been provisionally suspended for an anti-doping violation after testing positive for two banned substances.

Ujah tested positive for banned substances known as SARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators) and Ostarine, an anabolic agent, which help the user build muscle.

The 27-year-old ran the first leg of the final in which the Brits came agonisingly close to winning the gold at the 2020 Olympics, but were pipped on the line by Italy who took gold.

Ujah is one of many athletes found to have breached anti-doping rules at Tokyo 2020, with Bahrain's middle-distance runner Sadik Mikhou, Georgian shot-putter Benik Abramyan and Kenyan sprinter Mark Otieno Odhiambo also under investigation.

They said in a statement: "The AIU now awaits the conclusion of the ITA proceedings against the above athletes, which will determine whether any anti-doping rule violations have been committed and what consequences [if any] should be imposed in relation to the Olympic Games."

Should Team GB lose their silver medal, it will be handed to third-place Canada, while fourth-place China will be upgraded to bronze.

Tokyo 2020 was a historic Games for Great Britain as they matched the medal haul of 65 from London 2012.

But as this tweet states, they’re now in danger of falling short of the magic number.

“If Team GB lose that men’s 4x100m relay silver their much trumpeted achievement in matching the 65 medals of London 2012 will be no more,” it read.

Should the Brits lose the silver medal, it will not impact their standings in the 2020 Olympic Games medal table.

Despite fifth-place Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) having more medals overall, Team GB have two more of the all-important gold medals and will remain fourth.

The US pipped China to the top spot, while host nation Japan impressed at their home Olympics, finishing third.
