Team considering Covid passports visits Israel to see them in action

The UK is seriously considering how to roll out Covid passports which could allow foreign travel - or even access to domestic venues.

Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove and England’s deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam are in Israel to examine the country’s vaccine passport system.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “They are seeing first-hand the work on certification that Israel has up and running over there as we continue the work that we are doing on certification as an option here.”

The visit is “a purely Covid-related trip”, the spokesman said.

A Covid passport could prove that someone has had both doses of a vaccine, and show if they have been infected previously and therefore have antiobodies.

It could also show if someone has had a negative coronavirus tyest.

Some countries will require such proof before international travel can start again.

There has also been discussion over whether the passport - which could be an app on your phone - could allow access to some pubs or major events in the UK.
