Team behind Birmingham's Hen and Chickens plans new bar launch

The team behind a popular Birmingham pub famed for its Indian desi food is launching a new bar and restaurant in the city early next year.

Brothers Sunny and Sonu Rull, who run the Hen and Chickens in Constitution Hill, are planning to turn the 19th century Tramshed building in the Jewellery Quarter into a new venue called The Rolling Mill.

The 7,857 sq ft space has been acquired from property group Javelin Block and is undergoing a refurbishment programme to create capacity for 280 covers, heated mezzanine rooftop, a covered courtyard, two bars and a private internal terrace.

At least 40 new jobs are expected to be created at the venue which will serve a European menu.

The historic L-shaped site has access from both Hall Street and Kenyon Street and went on sale last year with a £2 million price tag.

It is made up of two industrial barns which are joined together and inside there is still the original brickwork and an exposed timber ceiling.

Sunny Rull said: "We are so looking forward to launching The Rolling Mill next year and hope this provides some much-needed good news for the hospitality sector in Birmingham.

"2020 has undoubtedly been tough for all, particularly in our industry, and we know there is still a lot to battle in the coming months.

"However, we truly believe that The Rolling Mill concept is going to help revitalise what was such a thriving sector in the city and we cannot wait to welcome Birmingham when our doors are open."

Sonu Rull added: "We are so excited to be bringing a new concept of vibrant, memorable and relaxed dining to the West Midlands.

"If the pandemic has shown us anything, it's that people value spending time with their loved ones and we hope that The Rolling Mill will be a venue in which all can come together to unwind and enjoy amazing food, drink and atmosphere for many years to come."
