Teaching staff to take plunge for charity at gruelling triathlon

A mum's mission to get healthier inspired her daughter to take the plunge and recruit teaching colleagues to a take part in a triathlon.

Fliss Prior watched her mum, Sue Prior, do an open-water challenge at Holme Pierrepont Country Park at the age of 60 in 2017.

"I thought if mum can do it, anyone can do it," said Fliss, a lead teacher in the Flying High Trust, a multi-academy trust incorporating a partnership of 24 schools.

She rallied colleagues to take part in the Nottingham Sprint Triathlon in 2017, which is run by an event company and has attracted more than 1,000 enthusiasts this year.

From a smaller entry in the beginning of five teams from the Trust, this year's sterling effort, to raise cash for charity, has grown to 14 relay teams taking part - including head teachers, teaching assistants and teachers as well as the chief executive.

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 18, some will be taking a dip in the cool waters of the Regatta Lake for a 750-metre swim, while others will take on the 20-kilometre cycle leg or a five-kilometre run.

All cash raised will go to Rainbows Hospice. Fliss is raising money on this JustGiving page.

She said: "It is basically about in the Flying High Trust we have seven different values, including pride and perseverance. We are always pushing the children out of their comfort zones, but this is to prove we can do that too!"
