Teachers to stop work for update

TEACHERS at Hunter public schools will stop work on Thursday for an update on negotiations between the NSW Teacher's Federation and the Department of Education about the new award to start January 1, 2020.

The federation's council voted unanimously on November 23 for statewide mass meetings of financial members for an update on negotiations about salary and working conditions.

Members have been invited to gather at 20 Hunter venues for a 30 minute broadcast from 8.45am, with time for debate afterwards.

The department said schools will operate as normal on Thursday and all students will be supervised during the meeting. But schools have also dispensed their own advice to families. Biraban Public said the industrial action won't impact students and the day will operate as normal. Meanwhile Kotara High said there will be minimal supervision and no classes until 11am. Meanwhile Catholic Schools Office education officers, professional officers, psychologists and administrative staff will hold a one-hour stop work meeting this afternoon.
