Teachers reach agreement with school to call off strike action

Strike plans at a Wirral school have been called off.

In November last year teachers at Kingsway Primary School in Wallasey voted for six days of strike action over hygiene fears.

The teachers, who are part of the National Education Union (NEU), claimed they had had to flush toilets themselves with buckets of water as there was no running water at the school.

At the time, Peter Middleman, NEU regional secretary, said there was poor sanitation and hygiene at the school, with the hand washing regime for students less sophisticated than it should be, a serious concern amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

But the initial part of this strike plan was called off a couple of weeks later after progress was made in negotiations between the Union, Kingsway Primary and Wirral Council.

The NEU has now announced strike action at the school has formally ended.

The Union said it managed to reach an agreement with the school and the local authority to address several issues it had concerns with.

Bora Oktas, regional officer at the NEU, said: “Our members have agreed to suspend previous strike actions over their concerns for the health and safety of staff and pupils to allow for further consideration and consultation.

“We have entered into these talks in a constructive manner with a view to resolving this dispute in an amicable way.

“Thanks to our members’ determination and hard work, progress has been made in those talks and they have now agreed to formally end their dispute.”

Mr Oktas added: “We congratulate our Kingsway members on behalf of everyone in the NEU.

“I take particular pride in the fact that our members, who have worked tirelessly to protect the pupils and vulnerable staff in the school during these difficult times of Covid, have delivered quality education and care for students at Kingsway Primary.”

Mr Middleman said: “Over the last eight months the value of promoting good industrial relations and acting on the professional concerns of staff has been highlighted at Kingsway and we congratulate everyone who has contributed including our members, the new school leadership and the local authority.

“We’re confident that the school has a brilliant future ahead of it which will be welcome news to students, parents and the wider Wallasey community”.

Wirral Council was approached for comment.
