Teachers in tears over school kids' 'heartbreaking' packed lunches

Teachers have shared the worst ever packed lunches pupils have brought to school - including a left over Happy Meal.

Educators from across the country took to Mumsnet to share the most awful lunches kids in their classes have turned up with and some of them are heartbreaking.

One primary school teacher said a pupil had brought in a pork pie and a can of shandy which he had cobbled together himself because “that’s all there was in the fridge”.

Another teacher had a similar experience with a boy of eight who brought in a can of Dark Fruits cider, thinking it was a soft drink.

Another was sent in with a full pack of gingerbread biscuits because his mum "was too tired to go to the shops".

One mum brazenly sent her son in with a can of Red Bull, explaining that he needed it after playing on his Xbox all night and she felt like "he needed a pick-me-up".

One member of staff at a school south of the border was sent to school with a Happy Meal box with a cold McDonald’s burger and fries.

The child's gran told school staff it had been brought the previous day and "was a shame to waste it".

In another case a child was sent to school with a Pot Noodle, the parent assuming the five-year-old would have access to a kettle and boiling water in Primary 1.

Another child had a small tin of baked beans and a packet of Jaffa Cakes in their lunch box.

Another teacher told the heartbreaking tale of a child who was sent to school with no money or lunch and told staff he had cereal and water for breakfast because his mum needed the milk for her coffee.

The teacher admitted the child's story reduced her to tears.

The Children's Food Trust recommends that youngsters should have a packed lunch box containing a portion of meat, starchy food (eg bread), fruit and veg, dairy and either fruit juice or water to drink.
