Teachers form picket line at The Castle School in Thornbury as strike hits

Striking teachers at a South Gloucestershire school stood outside their workplace this morning - and they were delighted to gain some pupil approval.

The decision to take industrial action at The Castle School, Thornbury, was made in response to teachers' belief they are being overworked.

Around 90 people joined the picket line this morning, including children offering food and support.

The striking teachers said: "Children spent all night baking cakes and they were holding placards and telling us they were really behind us."

Head teacher Will Roberts described the strike as "highly inconvenient" as he informed parents last week that the school would have to close for the day.

He said: “The current workload settlement for staff at The Castle is already more favourable than for colleagues at many other schools.

“[However] we recognise the genuine concerns about workload which is why we have been as flexible as we can possibly be in agreeing to their reasonable requests.”

Speaking to Bristol Live, the unhappy teachers expressed their disappointment with Mr Roberts' message.

They said: "We want an apology for the tone of the letter sent to parents because he brought us into disrepute."

The teachers will hold a meeting with school management tomorrow afternoon.
