Teacher who rarely drank died after having bottle and a half of red wine in garden

A popular teacher died after drinking wine in the garden with her best friend, an inquest heard.

Gillian Howe drank a bottle and a half of wine while sitting in the sun last June when she became confused and "slumped" in her chair.

The 46-year-old fell unconscious and, despite the best efforts of her friends and paramedics, she could not be rescusitated.

The teacher, from Hull, leaves behind husband Ed and children Grace, 11, Peter, 9, Laura, 7, and Evelyn, 5, Hull Live reported.

According to Mrs Howe’s family she rarely drank and was usually the designated driver.

They described her death as a "tragic accident” and said what happened “may not had been the case in someone used to drinking".

On June 29, 2018 both women had fallen into a slumber after drinking the wine.

When Mrs Howe's friend woke she was unable to rouse the teacher, leading her to run home to her husband for help.

When her husband arrived he called for an ambulance.

Paramedics carried out CPR before taking her to Hull Royal Infirmary where she died en route in the early hours of June 30.

Mr Howe was at work and was told of her tragic death when he returned home the following morning.

This week he told an inquest that on June 29 the pair had gone to the summer fair together before he left for work at around 4.30pm.

Mr Howe said: “That was the last time I saw her. I sent her a message at 9.30pm saying thank you for everything and she said there was no need at all and ‘we all love you so much’ and that was my last contact with her.

“She was a devoted mum and a fantastic teacher and was loved by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.”

Pathologist Dr Justin Cooke, who carried out the post mortem, said Mrs Howe had died due to respiratory failure as a result of alcohol intoxication.

A toxicology report showed Mrs Howe was just under four times the legal alcohol limit.

Because she was not a regular drinker she was not able to tolerate alcohol as well as someone who regularly drank.

Paying tribute to Mrs Howe, her father, Peter Sykes, said: “She was a wonderful daughter who was devoted to her family and we will miss her greatly.

“She had four children and loved them greatly and would do anything to make them happy.”

Michael Dodd, executive head teacher of Cleeve Primary School where Mrs Howe worked, expressed his sadness at hearing of the tragedy.

He said: "Our thoughts are with Gill’s family, friends and particularly her husband Ed and her children, Grace, Peter, Laura and Evelyn.

"Gill, our Year 3/4 teacher, worked at the school for 14 years and was a passionate and well-respected teacher who worked hard to provide an excellent standard of education for all the children.

"Her focus was always on the children and making sure they had the best possible chance to achieve their full potential. She will be sorely missed.

"We will now offer our full support to pupils, parents and school staff during this difficult time."

HM Senior Coroner, Rosemary Baxter concluded that Mrs Howe’s death was alcohol related.
