Teacher tests positive for coronavirus at secondary school

A teacher has tested positive for coronavirus at a school in Bristol.

Bosses at Mangotsfield School say they are 'following all government guidance in managing Covid-19', which includes a deep clean.

The teacher stopped working at the school on May 5 after developing mild symptoms.

During lockdown the school has remained open for children of key workers.

A school spokesperson said: "A member of staff at Mangotsfield School, who was last in school on Tuesday (May 5), developed mild symptoms several days later and yesterday tested positive for coronavirus.

"Mangotsfield School has been following all government guidance in relation to managing Covid-19, and we have also followed the official guidance we have been given in managing our response to this case."

However, a whistleblower at the academy, who wished not to be named, believes leaders were not doing enough to keep staff safe.

They said: "Teachers have not been told who has coronavirus.

"Everyone has been working together for a week since the teacher first started showing symptoms and we weren't told anything.

"They are only deep cleaning half the building and have moved everyone to other half.

"The school should have been closed and teachers told earlier."

Sheiling Special School, in Thornbury, has been closed this week after two teachers tested positive for coroanvirus.

Boris Johnson has announced plans to reopen primary schools to Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 from the June 1.

Older pupils could head back to classrooms by July.
