Teacher stabbed at Tewkesbury Academy out of hospital and ‘recovering well’

A teacher stabbed at a school in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, on Monday is “recovering well” after being discharged from hospital, a spokesman has said.

A teenage boy was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident at Tewkesbury Academy about 9am, which saw the secondary and two other nearby schools placed on lockdown.

The male teacher was stabbed in a corridor before being taken to hospital in a “stable” condition, police said.

He was discharged from hospital on Monday evening, while the arrested teenager remained in custody.

A Tewkesbury Academy spokesman confirmed on Tuesday the school had reopened and the teacher was on the road to recovery.

“Following careful assessment and consultation with police, Tewkesbury Academy reopened today,” said the spokesperson.

“We feel it is important for our students to be able to return to a sense of normality in their school, where we will be providing a range of additional mental and emotional support for students and staff.

“Police will retain a presence at the school for the coming days to provide reassurance.

“We are pleased to confirm the Tewkesbury colleague injured in yesterday’s incident has been discharged from hospital and is recovering well. He has expressed his gratitude for the many positive messages he has received.

“All of us at Tewkesbury Academy are grateful for the support we have received from our community and colleagues from across our trust and from the wider education sector.

“We look forward to continuing to support each other, while focusing again on providing a high-quality education to the young people of Tewkesbury.”

Emergency services were called to Tewkesbury Academy in Ashchurch Road shortly after the school day began on Monday.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone told reporters outside Tewkesbury Academy in Gloucestershire earlier Monday: “Just after 9am we received a call from someone telling us about a threat to a teacher at Tewkesbury Academy.

“Minutes later we received a call from the ambulance service telling us that a male teacher had been stabbed in a corridor at the school.

“He was taken to hospital with a single stab wound.”

A teenager, from Tewkesbury, fled the scene and was arrested by armed officers in the nearby Stoke Orchard area on suspicion of attempted murder. A knife was recovered.
