Teacher resigns, second 'let go' from Gold Coast school after students asked to remove trousers

One teacher has resigned and another's contract won't be renewed at an elite private school on the Gold Coast after students were asked to remove their trousers during an adventure training session.

The Year 9 boys at The Southport School (TSS) were participating in a planned blackout challenge in September, which was being supervised by a teacher wearing night vision goggles.

The group was required to remove a shoe or item of clothing, throw it into a dark room and work cooperatively to find it and put it back on.

However, one of the teachers decided to increase the challenge by asking boys to remove their trousers.

The two supervising teachers were stood aside last month.

TSS released a statement this morning saying the teachers "will not be returning" to the school.

The ABC has been told one teacher resigned and a contracted teacher will not return.

Matter 'won't go to police'

The school said an investigation had been conducted by a major national legal firm.

"[They] found that there were no grounds for reporting the incident to police," the statement said.

"However the investigation did find that the teachers had breached the school's expectations with respect to conduct."

The school's headmaster Greg Wain released a statement.

"At TSS we aim to create an environment where our students are supported to ask questions and speak up if they have concerns, and I commend these students for doing so," Mr Wain said.

Last month Mr Wain said the "completely unacceptable" activity had come about when one of the teachers had decided to increase the challenge.

"This changed activity was not authorised and, understandably, several boys objected to removing their trousers and doing the activity in their underpants," he said.

"Changing the activity and asking the boys to participate in their underpants was completely unacceptable."
