Teacher makes 'funny' find while litter picking

A woman described her surprise after a 'historic' find while litter picking outside her flat.

Kate Roberts, 47, often gathers rubbish left outside her home on Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port.

But on Thursday she made a rare discovery.

The teacher told the ECHO : "I couldn't believe it. I just could not believe it. It was just really, really, really, really funny."

Kate said she was at first going to bin the odd-looking can with an old-fashioned ring pull.

Instead she brought it in and cleaned the mud from inside the can with colours so faded the red had turned pink.

Turning the Pepsi can over, she saw a best before date of December 1989.

Kate moved into her flat a year ago and said there is a problem with littering in the area.

She told the ECHO : "There's a local shop on the corner of my road not far away. We get loads of people who walk past, and there's empty bottles of vodka and empty cans and everything, just thrown over the wall.

"I'm constantly going out and picking them up because they annoy me when I look out the window.

"But I've got three cats, and one of my cats had been scrapping in the corner right next to the wall.

"And that's where I found it."

Kate told the ECHO : "I was still in high school. I'm 47 now. It just goes to show how long it's been there for."

There are waste bins in the area, and the council does clean up litter, Kate said.

But there is still a 'ridiculous' amount of rubbish left in this part of Ellesmere Port.

"It just goes to show, and I know they are recyclable, cans are recyclable, but after all that time, it's survived. It's shocking really. Things need to change."
