Teacher 'knifed to death by pupil' during Spanish lesson

A high school teacher has reportedly been stabbed to death by a pupil during a Spanish lesson.

Emergency services rushed to Saint-Thomas d'Aquin Catholic high school in the French town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz at around 10am on Wednesday, 22 February, following reports that the teacher had been attacked during a Spanish lesson. Tragically medics were unable to save the teacher who was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Though details of the victim are yet to be confirmed officially, they are said to be in their 50s. According to the Mirror, a 16-year-old pupil was restrained before police and emergency services arrived.

Prosecutor Jérôme Bourrier said: "I can confirm that there was indeed a knife attack and that the victim has just died."

The incident was revealed on Twitter as it has been reported that France's Minister of Education Pap Ndiaye is en route to the area.

Pyrénées-Atlantiques Senator Frédérique Espagnac said she "totally condemns this act of violence against a teacher" and has sent support to the teacher and his family.

Government spokesman Olivier Véran said politicians give their support to the "educational community" as he told reporters: "I can hardly imagine the trauma that this can represent."
